Our Story
1950-1959

Helzberg's Diamond Shops had truly come of age by the 50's and Barnett's role as
both an industry and community leader blossomed.
In 1950, Barnett staged his most spectacular promotion with the showing of the
Henry Winston Court of Jewels. The showing drew thousands to Kansas City's
Country Club Plaza store to see the legendary Hope diamond and the Star of the
East, among other famous jewels. Katherine Hepburn accepted Barnett's invitation
to model the famous jewels in publicity shots.
In May of 1956, Barnett Jr. graduated from the University of Michigan and
embarked on a tour of Europe and New York, visiting diamond houses and jewelry
manufacturers. He joined the executive staff as Assistant to the President and
his first duties were those of a buyer. His brother Charles joined the company
two years later. By the end of the decade, Helzberg's operated 15 retail jewelry
shops in 6 markets.
