1950-1959

Sketch of the 50s Helzberg's Diamond Shops had truly come of age by the 50's and Barnett's role as both an industry and community leader blossomed.

Newspaper clip In 1950, Barnett staged his most spectacular promotion with the showing of the Henry Winston Court of Jewels. The showing drew thousands to Kansas City's Country Club Plaza store to see the legendary Hope diamond and the Star of the East, among other famous jewels. Katherine Hepburn accepted Barnett's invitation to model the famous jewels in publicity shots.

Examining gems In May of 1956, Barnett Jr. graduated from the University of Michigan and embarked on a tour of Europe and New York, visiting diamond houses and jewelry manufacturers. He joined the executive staff as Assistant to the President and his first duties were those of a buyer. His brother Charles joined the company two years later. By the end of the decade, Helzberg's operated 15 retail jewelry shops in 6 markets.
