Aquamarine jewelry
From mermaids to you.
Aquamarine comes from the Latin
aqua marina, "sea water." In some ancient stories, aquamarines were treasures protected by mermaids.
In many cultures, people believe that they ensure a long, happy marriage. The soft, icy color works beautifully with more intense accent stones, such as sapphires. We also love a large, dramatic aquamarine in a modern setting. Aquamarine is the birthstone for March, but is always appropriate as a holiday gift or "just because." | | Cool colors, like white gold and diamonds, set off the frosty blue in aquamarines, and emphasize their sparkle. | | |
Color and pedigree

Aquamarines range from light blue-green to blue with just a hint of green. Most have very high clarity and are almost inclusion-free. They’re often enhanced with heat to reduce the green and emphasize the blue. Usually, they come from Brazil or Africa.
Taking them home
Whether you wear your aquamarine on a date or on the playground with the kids, it usually holds up well to wear and tear. Aquamarine jewelry is moderately scratch resistant, earning a 7 1/2 to 8 on the Mohs Hardness Scale (10 is the highest rating. Diamonds are a 10) however keep in mind that they can fracture or break if they receive a sharp blow. Clean aquamarine jewelry with liquid jewelry cleaners, or just mild soapy detergent and water. Ultrasonic cleaning is usually safe.
