Blue Topaz

Blue topaz jewelry

Strength, protection, and captivating sparkle.

The ancient Greeks believed that topaz made its wearer strong. Ancient Egyptians believed that it represented the sun god, Ra. And many a legend says that topaz can protect against evil curses and poisons.

We love blue topaz because it’s so intensely colored, and gives an exotic accent to any outfit. And protection against evil curses can’t hurt.

Blue topaz is the birthstone for December, but we think it makes a stunning anniversary gift and a unique Valentine’s Day gift.

Color and pedigree

Blue topaz can range from pale blue to greenish blue to dark blue. Often, it’s almost entirely free of inclusions. Nearly all commercially sold blue topaz is heated through an irradiation process to bring out its brilliant blue color.

Brazil is the top producer of topaz, followed by Madagascar, Nigeria, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Taking it home

Blue topaz jewelry needs a gentle touch, so be careful not to wear it while playing sports, rock climbing, or taking self defense classes. It earns an 8 on the Mohs Hardness Scale (10 is highest), so it resists scratches well, but it can easily fracture with any significant impact. If you must wear it while playing, say, ice hockey, consider blue topaz earrings, which will get knocked around less than that blue topaz ring.

Clean blue topaz with liquid jewelry cleaner or mild soapy detergent and water. Never use ultrasonic cleaners.

When blue topaz works best

Blue topaz jewelry gives you stunning color at a lower price than other blue gemstones. It looks especially elegant with dark clothing and for special occasions, although we think it can also look fabulous with jeans.
