Citrine

Citrine jewelry

Freshly squeezed style

Citrine comes from the Latin citrus, as in citrus fruits. Old legends claimed that citrine could guard its wearer from evil thoughts (although we’re sure you never have evil thoughts!).

The birthstone for November, citrine is currently one of our most popular gems. We love it set in yellow gold, and it’s especially beautiful when accented with diamonds.

Color and pedigree

Citrines range from citrusy light yellow to deep, brownish orange. Often they have very few inclusions, so their clarity is high. Almost all are produced by heat-treating pale amethysts, just like Mother Nature does. Most citrines come from Brazil.

Taking it home

Citrine jewelry wears well, so you can feel confident wearing it in many situations. It has moderate scratch resistance (7 on the Mohs Hardness Scale, where 10 is the top) and good resistance to chipping and breaking. Clean it with liquid jewelry cleaner or just mild soapy detergent and water. Ultrasonic cleaning is usually safe.

A good choice when…

Give citrines to anyone who would welcome a touch of sun year round. The darker colors work well for an autumn birthday. We think citrine earrings look beautiful on anyone whose hair has golden or reddish highlights, and for a real show stopping gift, you can pair them with a matching pendant.

Citrines coordinate nicely with gold or tortoise-framed glasses.
