Shape

The shape of your future: The first decision.

When it’s time to start looking at engagement rings, most people start by narrowing down what diamond shapes they are interested in. Then, when they start shopping for a specific diamond, they start thinking about the 4 Cs.

There’s a difference between cut and shape, even though they’re related. Cut refers to the number and placement of a diamond’s facets, no matter what shape the diamond may be. Shape refers to the overall form of the diamond — round, for example, or heart-shaped.

Clues for what shape she’s into.

Many women know what they like, and what looks best on their hand. Chances are, she’s dropped hints — like pointing out a friend’s ring. If you have the kind of relationship where you talk about everything, with no surprises, you can always ask her. Try slipping a Helzberg catalog in among her mail to open the conversation. Look at her existing jewelry for clues. Or take one of her friends, her sister or mother into your confidence. It’s the best way to learn not only the shape she prefers, but the setting, too.

Is she a dazzler? Consider a cushion shape.

Classic? Look at round diamonds.

Old-fashioned? She may love an emerald shape.
