Lab Created & Man Made Diamonds FAQ

The how, when, what of created diamonds.

  • How are lab grown diamonds different from mined diamonds?

Lab grown diamonds are man made by simulating natural conditions of extreme heat and pressure or chemical vapor deposition. Both mined and created diamonds are identical in chemical, optical, and physical composition.

  • If lab grown diamonds are the same as mined diamonds, why are they classified separately?

While there is no difference between a mined and a lab grown diamond, our consumer’s ability to make an informed choice must be protected. A complete disclosure is always in the best interests of both the consumer and the industry. In order for the consumer to be well informed about their choices, our industry is bound by law and ethics to disclose which diamonds are lab created.

  • What is the difference between man made diamonds, lab created diamonds and lab grown diamonds?

Man made diamonds, lab created diamonds and lab grown diamonds are the same thing—identical in quality and structure, and two terms are used interchangeably.

  • Are lab grown diamonds the same as diamond-like materials?

Lab grown diamonds and mined diamonds are both composed of incredibly pure crystal carbon as a single crystal. Diamond-like simulants such as cubic zirconium and moissanite may look somewhat similar to this, but the material is completely different with alternative physical properties. A diamond simulant also fails to meet the refraction and hardness standards of lab created and natural diamonds.

  • Are lab created diamonds a new phenomenon?

Diamonds were first created by man in the 1950’s, however, they did not achieve a gem quality that could be used in jewelry until decades later. In the last few years, methods have been perfected and it is now possible to create diamonds that meet or surpass natural diamonds in terms of desirability and beauty. So while man made diamonds aren’t a new phenomenon, they have only just recently become viable for fine jewelry.

  • How much time does it take to grow a lab created diamond?

Depending on the color and size, it can take between 60-120 days to create a diamond in the laboratory.

  • What are the available qualities, sizes, and shapes of man made diamonds?

Man made diamonds are available in the traditional shapes of round, princess, cushion, oval, pear, marquise and emerald, with a size range that goes up to 4 ct. These diamonds also range in color from colorless to near colorless and are even available in fancy colors, such as yellow.

  • Are there any unique inscriptions for easy identification?

Yes, each man made diamond over 0.50 ct has a unique ID inscribed on the diamond itself. The information is detailed in your certificate so you can always identify your diamond with the help of a jeweler.
