Opal jewelry

A gift idea that’s 6,000 years old

That’s the age of opal artifacts found in Kenya. Opals have long been considered magic; maybe it’s those mysterious colors that shift and change across their surface. In Europe, opals have been thought to symbolize purity and hope. So if you’re hoping that someone will love the opal jewelry you’re about to buy her, you’re probably right.

Opals are extremely versatile, and look equally beautiful set in white gold or yellow gold. They also work well with a variety of accent gemstones, from deep-blue Iolite to soft pink sapphire.

Opal is the birthstone for October, but opal jewelry is a heartwarming gift for almost any occasion.

Color and pedigree

Opals flash a rainbow of iridescent colors, an effect that’s called play-of-color. White and black are most common, but you’ll also find gray, red, orange, yellow and brown. Crystal opals are translucent.

Opal jewelry may have enhancements — on rare occasions colorless oils, resins, plastics or wax are used to fill natural fractures — and sometimes it’s dyed to heighten color. Most opals come from Australia.

Taking them home

Opals need more tender care than many stones, since they’re only a bit harder than glass. That means you probably should not wear an opal ring to your kickboxing class... but definitely bring it out for a special dinner date or trip to the theater! Opals rate 5 1/2 to 6 on the Mohs Hardness Scale (10 is hardest), and aren’t very resistant to chipping and breaking. If that opal ring was treated with oil or wax, don’t leave it in bright light, mild heat or direct sun too long.

Mild soapy detergent and water is the best way to clean opal jewelry. Never use ultrasonic cleaners.

Opal jewelry is a great choice when...

You want something a bit unusual, that you won’t see worn by a lot of other women. Opals are prized for their versatility, because their colorful surface looks beautiful with many different shades and a variety of settings. Opals are also a nice addition to a wardrobe of faceted gems — just for a change.
