Color and pedigree

Opals rate 5 1/2 to 6 on the Mohs Hardness Scale (10 is hardest), and aren’t very resistant to chipping and breaking. If that opal ring was treated with oil or wax, don’t leave it in bright light, mild heat or direct sun too long.
Mild soapy detergent and water is the best way to clean opal jewelry. Never use ultrasonic cleaners.
