Every handbag is inspected and authenticated at least two times by best-in-class independent authenticators. Helzberg contracts two reputable companies who specialize in luxury goods to authenticate our pre-owned handbags. Every customer is provided digital access to a certificate of authenticity for their handbag via a barcode on the tag.

The following elements are assessed during grading to determine a handbag’s condition:

•Corner wear
 

•Loose stitching
 

•Discoloration and color transfer
 

•Scuffing (patent, canvas/material)
 

•Handle/strap darkening
 

•Exterior marks (pen/dirt, water spots)
 

•Glazing wear on edges
 

•Tarnished hardware or scratches (interior/exterior)
 

•Metallic hardware damage/wear
 

•Peeling/flaking interiors
 

•Missing hardware or decorative crystals


 •Indentation marks and fading

Condition grading for pre-owned luxury goods are usually universal, but due to the different global suppliers we work with around the globe, our ratings are more in depth than others. Here’s how we grade our pre-owned handbags:



General grades and descriptions:

• N (New, Unused): A pristine handbag that has never been used, with all the original packaging, tags and accessories intact.
 

• NS (New Surplus): Almost new, possibly tried on or handled, but with no visible signs of wear.
 

• S (Like New): May have been a display piece or briefly handled but remains in near-mint condition with no noticeable flaws.
 

• SA (Near Like New): Slightly used with minimal signs of handling, bridging the gap between Like New and Lightly Used.
 

• A (Lightly Used): Shows minimal signs of wear, such as light patina, faint scuffing or minor scratches, primarily on base corners or hardware. 
 

• AB (Gently Used): Slightly more noticeable wear than Lightly Used but still in very good condition with no major flaws. 
 

• B (Used): Clearly used with moderate wear consistent with normal use but remains in good overall condition without significant damage.
 

• BC (Well-Loved): More noticeable wear than Used but still functional, with potential for restoration. 
 

• C (Well Used): Heavily used with visible wear and may require refurbishment or repair but remains functional.
